Reasons to Look Forward to Going Back to School

Vivian Kim

August is here, meaning that for most of us, it’s time to go back to school. Most students’ immediate response is a long groan and a feeling of dread. However, there’s a lot to look forward to, and here are some of those reasons to actually get excited about going back.

1. Seeing your friends every day

This is probably the most obvious reason to look forward to the new school year. Whether you were travelling with your family during vacation or just relaxing at home, it’s not very likely that you got to hang out with your friends as often as you do when you’re at school. Going back to school means that you get to either reconnect with the friends that you haven’t seen in a few months or to spend even more time with the friends that you met up with during summer.

2. New classes

Generally, for high school students, going into a higher grade level means getting access to and priority over the lower grade levels for classes. This allows you to be able to pick the electives that are more suited to your interests, and it’s always more fun to be part of a class that you’re interested in over ones that you just have to do, where you’re more likely to be waiting for the bell than actually listening to the lecture.

3. Back-to-School Shopping

The new school year is the time for new clothes and new school supplies. It might not be about who has the best colored pencils and gel pens anymore, but there’s nothing more satisfying than filling up your cart with notebooks, folders, pencils, locker accessories, and the other cool things that you’ll use in the next year. Also, it’s a great time to get new clothes with all the back-to-school sales that many stores have.

4. Autumn is here!

Summer’s biggest con: the weather. It can get to over 100°, making practically every experience you have with going outside a hassle, not to mention all the bugs that swarm around in the heat. When school starts, the weather cools down, and that means it’s time to get out those hot drinks and sweaters.

5. Clubs and Sports

Being back in a club surrounded by familiar people with similar interests as you is a great feeling. And if you’re not currently in any clubs at the moment, create one! This is a great opportunity for those who might not be interested in any of the clubs currently offered at their schools. By creating a club, you get to meet new people that like the same things that you do. Not to mention, it looks great on college applications. Belonging in a sports team is also another perk of going back to school. Clubs and sports teams are a great way of meeting new people and to be with friends that you have already made.

6. Learning

Learning about a new topic can be exciting, and really getting to understand it will give you a sense of pride. It’s the biggest goal of going to school and is very important part of a person’s life. As a student, our main job is to learn, and it’s a pretty great one.

These are just a few of the great things that come with going back to school. So, even though you might not quite be ready for summer to end, just remember that there are still some exciting things that will come in the new year.
